Best Holiday Proposal Ideas

Everyone gasped as the bride began to walk down the isle.  “She’s  the most beautiful woman in the world” the groom said to his best man. The long awaited wedding day had finally arrived, and I get the honour of capturing on film, the magic unfolding as two people declare their love, devotion and commitment to each other. As a wedding photographer, I thought it would be interesting to write this blog based on my experiences over the years. So let’s rewind the clock to last Christmas when this groom decided to ask his beloved to marry him.

Christmas is one of the most romantic times of the year and the perfect time to propose marriage. There are so many different ways to “pop the question” but what matters most is that they say yes!  Just like the story above you’ve got to do something that will create a lasting memory. According to a survey, by the wedding blog, The Knot, 16% of all proposals take place during the month of December, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as the number 1 and 2 most popular days to “pop the question.”

When I meet a couple at the wedding photography consultation, I always ask about how they met. I love to hear the proposal stories of each couple I meet and the number one reason for their chosen proposal style is.  “I thought about what she would really love to do.” This was also the case with the couple from the story. They both really loved Christmas time. They loved celebrating with their families and that special Christmas feeling. My advice is to keep it simple and personal. If you are stressing about popping the question then you are probably over thinking it. Trust me, your beloved will be excited to hear the news of you wanting to dedicate your life and love to her/him. From the stories I have heard and experienced I’ve put together my 10 favourite Christmas proposals to give you some inspiration.

1.

The Christmas Gift

Probably one of the most cliche ways to ask someone to marry you, but hey, we all love a cliche and we all love presents. There is nothing quite like receiving the most wonderful gift of all on Christmas morning…..You! Picture how beautiful that moment would be, to have Christmas music playing in the background and opening presents together in the morning, creating that nostalgic Christmas feeling. Then, with the final gift of all, you pop the all important question.

2.

Christmas Proposal Walk

Another great way to propose, whether the weather be fine or surrounded by a smattering of snow, is during a romantic after dinner walk. Although, we are in England and so can never be sure of the weather so you may be wise to have a plan B, just in case. What could be more romantic than using the element of surprise and dropping to one knee, mid walk?

3.

The Christmas Whisper

If you prefer a more intimate and discreet setting, then take notes from a recent couple I talked to. On Christmas Day morning, as she was putting the final touches to her festive outfit, he came up behind her with a box wrapped in red bow. He put his arms around her and held her close and as she opened the box he whispered gently into her ear. “Will you marry me?”

4.

The Cracker Proposal

This one might require you to be a bit crafty… All you would need to do is make a small opening in your beloveds Christmas cracker, big enough for the ring to go in. Make sure you seal and mark the Christmas cracker carefully, you don’t want someone else opening it. Just be ready to hunt for it if it goes flying. What better way to start a celebration meal than with an extra excuse for celebration?

5.

Christmas Family Proposal

If you and your Beloved are very family orientated there is nothing better then having family around you witnessing you pop the big question. Having your friends and family around you means you have someone to take photos or video of your proposal. When choosing your photographer make sure its someone who can keep a secret, from your soon to be fiancé and of course, can manage a camera.

6.

Proposal Treasure Hunt

Who doesn’t love a good game at Christmas? Why not make it the most memorable event for your beloved. Place clues all around your home that are romanic, sweet and funny. I recommend having previous memories of your relationship. Finally the last clue is the special one of you popping the question.

7.

Outdoor Activity Proposal

If you have a special winter activity that you love, then what better way to pop the question than integrating the proposal into this shared pastime.  If you love horse riding then go out on a romanic stroll or if ice skating is what you love then why not ask the one you love right in the centre of the ice rink. Just make sure its an activity you both love doing together.

8.

Proposal Wingman

If you both have a loved dog or cat then why not enlist the help of a wingdog (sorry had to say it. ) Attach a few Christmas accessories to your pet with a little bit of hopeful cooperation. Carefully tying a ribbon around your dog’s neck with the ring on it. What better way to pop the question than having great memories with your pet.

9.

New Years Countdown

10, 9.,8,… New Year’s Eve is another great opportunity to share a beautiful moment with the one you love and start the New Year off the way you want it to continue….Why not pop the question right at the stroke of midnight, bringing in the new year with the one you love. This could be as simple as being at home together snuggled up, or out with friends and family with fireworks to celebrate this once in a lifetime moment.

10.

The Christmas Eve Date

Another recent proposal story told to me by a couple was of a Christmas Eve dinner at the venue of their very first date. He asked her to marry him at the place where they first fell in love. This is such a beautiful proposal as it brings back all the amazing memories of  your first meeting and the journey you’ve been on together leading right up to this pinnacle point, where you pop the question.

Christmas is such a beautiful time to propose to the one you love, as it has strong ties with family and holiday traditions. My advice is to make it from the heart, whichever way you choose to ask. It will always be special because it is about the love you share. Now after reading this blog you will need to hire a photographer to capture all those special memories on your wedding day.
